How to keep carpet looking good between professional cleanings
If you’ve owned carpet for a while, you know that regular professional cleanings are crucial to keeping your carpet looking its best. But since you probably have your carpet professionally cleaned only once or twice per year, what do you do between cleanings to keep your carpet looking good? Here are our tips?
Vacuum often
This might seem like a given, but it’s important that you vacuum at least once per week. Not only does this remove the dirt, soil, and whatever else has been tracked onto your carpet, but it reduced the abrasive effects of these particles on the carpet fibers, reducing the likelihood of stress and wear.
It’s also crucial that you not neglect difficult to reach areas when vacuuming, particularly the stairs. Vacuuming the stairs can be a tedious and exhausting chore, but stairs receive a lot of wear, and failing to vacuum them regularly can compound this wear and age the carpeting there.
Clean spills ASAP
It is crucial that spills be addressed immediately, before they become stains. Soak up spilled liquids with cloth or paper towel, working from the outside of the spill in, to prevent it from spreading. Do not rub or scrub at the spill, as this will set it into the fibers, making it even more difficult to remove.
Clip snags
If you notice a snag in your carpeting, DO NOT pull it! This can cause further damage to your carpet. Instead, use scissors to clip the snag at its base to prevent it from getting pulled accidentally or snagging further.
Protect high-risk areas
If you have carpet in areas where it is likely to suffer dirt or spills, such as an entryway where people may be walking in with dirty shoes, or under the dining room table, where food may be dropped or drinks spilled, consider covering the area with an area rug. Area rugs are much easier and cheaper to replace than your carpeting, should they become damaged. You may also want to consider limiting dining or wearing shoes to areas in your home which are not carpeted. If you have pets, you may want to limit their access to carpeted areas, as well.
Keeping your carpet looking good all year round is easier than it seems, if you vacuum regularly, treat stains and snags quickly, and protect your carpet from unnecessary soiling and staining. And of course, get your carpet cleaned regularly by a professional carpet cleaning service.
